A one-of-a-kind handmade frame, gothic, macabre and quietly theatrical, for those who appreciate the finer things in death.

A preserved scorpion is displayed over an ornate, hand-cast and hand-painted cross against deep red velvet. Gold-toned lace borders the interior, and an ornamental label bearing the specimen’s Latin species name sits above the scorpion.

At the base, miniature hand-painted skulls sit alongside miniature books and a small bottle of decorative “blood”. Ornamental corner fittings finish the dark rectangular frame.

Lore

The apothecary kept one cabinet locked even after every bottle in the shop had been sold. Inside it stood a small red chamber, furnished with books no customer was permitted to borrow.

His successor assumed it held a valuable specimen. She carried it to the counter, intending to catalogue it, and found a handwritten account tucked beneath the frame. The previous owner had recorded every person who had asked for a poison, and what they had decided to do instead.

Some had bought sleeping draughts. Others had left with nothing. One had returned the following spring with flowers.

She put the chamber back in the cabinet, but left the key in the lock. When difficult customers came calling, she offered them a chair beside it and let them talk until the kettle boiled.
