Sanguis Aeternus | Vampires

A one-of-a-kind handmade frame, gothic, macabre and quietly theatrical, built as a wooden coffin lined with deep burgundy crushed velvet.

A mummified bat lies within the coffin, flanked by small vials of decorative “blood”. Beneath it sit three small hand-painted skulls and an ornate label bearing the bat’s Latin species name on aged paper. Tiny silver crosses decorate the glass, while ornate black gothic lace lies beneath the bat.

Between its feet, the bat holds a bone, also gripped by two bird feet with lacquered claws. The bird feet sit beneath a hand-cast, hand-painted vampire skull, crowned with decorative lace and a burgundy velvet hood. Hand-cast and hand-painted vampiric wings extend from the skull, with three hand-cast, hand-painted raven skulls arranged above it.

About the coffin:

The wooden coffin is entirely handmade from scratch, from start to finish. I design it myself, cut every part by hand, glue the structure together, then sand, stain and lacquer it. The glass is hand-cut to fit, and the interior is lined with deep burgundy crushed velvet. This is not a pre-made coffin or a ready-made frame.

Lore

For three generations, the housekeeper had followed the same instruction: keep the burgundy room prepared, and never throw away a bottle simply because it appeared empty.

The master of the house had been absent for sixty years. His correspondence still arrived, his accounts remained paid, and every autumn someone left a fresh pair of gloves on the hall table. The housekeeper dusted around them.

When the last of his solicitors died, a carpenter came to seal the bedroom. Behind the bed he found a narrow wooden coffin, too small for its supposed owner, carefully lined and arranged as though every object inside had a place in some private ceremony. He carried it downstairs and set it beside the unopened letters.

For the first time in sixty years, the bell in the burgundy room rang.

The housekeeper took the coffin back upstairs. She drew the curtains, straightened the velvet and left a clean glass on the bedside table. Then she wrote to the new solicitor to explain that the room would no longer be available for inspection.
