A one-of-a-kind handmade whimsical frame — for those who prefer to do their wandering after dark, with a light small enough to keep secrets and large enough to find the way.

A real cat skull gazes out from deep purple velvet, its jaws holding a miniature lantern that actually lights — battery-powered, warm-glowing, the kind of light that makes everything look like it is happening in a story. Black lace drapes around the skull and the rabbit paws below. Above, between two mismatched rabbit fur ears — one white, one tawny, because she has never felt the need to match — an amethyst moon catches what little light there is. On the forehead, a crow skull keeps watch with the quiet authority of a creature that has seen considerably more than it is letting on. Chains and earrings adorn the ears, accumulated with the unhurried confidence of someone who has been collecting beautiful things for a very long time. The frame is hand-cast and hand-painted, black and baroque, frame within a frame, the kind of frame that was always going to end up somewhere like this.

This is a piece about the long walk home through the dark — the comfortable kind, where you know the path and the lantern is warm and the crow on your head has opinions about the route but is, on balance, good company.

There is a particular kind of a creature who has never needed much light to find her way, but carries a lantern anyway — not for herself, but for the things that follow her home and are not entirely sure of the path. She has been known to spend entire evenings in the garden with the lantern lit and the crow on her head muttering navigational opinions into her left ear, her mismatched ears tilted at different angles as though she is listening to two conversations at once, which she is. She is fond of amethyst, of purple, of the particular quality of darkness that exists just beyond the reach of a small warm light. She does not consider herself a guide. She considers herself a destination. There is a difference, and the crow agrees, though he would phrase it differently.
