The Conservatory | Whimsical
A one-of-a-kind handmade frame, whimsical, witchy and feminine, for those who find beauty in the things the forest leaves behind.
An Argema mimosae moth rests before a gilded gothic window against deep navy crushed velvet. Gold lace traces the inside edges of the distinctive pointed wooden frame.
A roe deer lower jaw, split into two halves, curves around the moth. Moss, flowers, lichens and mushrooms cover the bone, with dewdrop-like accents catching the light among the woodland details. Pine cones nestle along the lower edge, beneath an ornate label bearing the moth’s Latin species name.
Above the moth sits a quartz crescent moon with an ornate gold border. A bird vertebra rests above it, surrounded by moss and botanical details.

About the frame:
The wooden frame is entirely handmade from scratch, from start to finish. I design it myself, cut each part by hand, glue the structure together, then sand, stain and lacquer it. The glass is hand-cut to fit. The interior is lined with deep navy crushed velvet and finished with gold lace. This is not a pre-made or ready-made frame.

About the composition:
Each botanical element is arranged individually around the specimen and bone, building a layered woodland scene against the deep navy velvet. The gold lace, gilded window and ornamented quartz moon bring warm accents to the green moss and lichen.

Lore
The conservatory stood so far inside the wood that its visitors usually arrived by accident. Its keeper considered this a sensible arrangement. Anyone willing to argue with three bramble hedges had probably earned a cup of tea.
She opened the windows at dusk and tended plants that preferred moonlight, although the mushrooms were forever insisting they needed no supervision. Every morning she collected dew in small glass dishes. The snails regarded these as public drinking fountains, a misunderstanding she had stopped trying to correct.
One autumn, a roe deer left two curved pieces of bone beneath her window. She tucked them into the garden beds, where moss soon settled over them and tiny flowers took root between the teeth. The deer returned the following evening to inspect the work and appeared quietly pleased.
As the nights grew colder, the keeper brought her garden indoors. She lined a little pointed room with navy velvet, trained the moss around its golden window and gave every mushroom a place with a view. A small bird contributed a bone for the highest shelf, then stayed to advise on the arrangement.
The moon, who had watched the proceedings with considerable interest, left a quartz crescent at the door. She hung it above the garden so there would be light even on cloudy nights.
There is still room for visitors, although the keeper asks that no one call the place abandoned. She has been here all along. She simply does not answer the door while watering.
