A real preserved Ayuthia spectabile — the Ghost Cicada — wings pale and translucent as cathedral glass, veined in gold, one of the most ethereal insects in existence. It is crowned with a hand-made silver lace ornament in the shape of a cross, the kind of adornment that belongs on a reliquary in a church that has been closed for a century. Dried white flowers gather around it like an offering left at a shrine. The whole piece rests against deep navy velvet, the colour of the sky at the moment just before it decides to be night, set behind glass in a hand-carved, hand-painted baroque frame — every detail deliberate, every flourish earned.

Ayuthia spectabile is named for its ghostly, near-transparent wings — rare, fragile, and entirely unforgettable. The cicada sings once. It is enough.
