Before there were horror films, there were myths. Before there were haunted houses, there were creatures that lived at the edges of maps — in the places cartographers marked with the words here be dragons. These were not warnings. They were invitations.
At Morbid Oddities, mythology isn't a reference point. It's a material. The creatures, the symbols, the stories — they find their way into the work the same way bones and velvet do. Deliberately. With weight.
Cerberus — the guardian of what cannot return
Three heads. One purpose. The dog that stands at the gate between the living and the dead doesn't let things through — in either direction. Cerberus is not a monster. He is a boundary made flesh.
Cerberus | Et Portis Inferis is a handmade reliquary built around this idea — the threshold, the guardian, the permanence of what lies beyond. Real bone, cast frame, black velvet. A piece that doesn't ask to be understood. Only acknowledged.

The Wolpertinger — the creature that shouldn't exist
From Bavarian folklore: a creature assembled from parts that don't belong together. Wings of a bird. Antlers of a deer. Body of a rabbit. Fangs. It has no single origin story because it was never meant to have one — it exists in the space between categories, in the place where taxonomy breaks down.
There's something deeply gothic about that. The Wolpertinger doesn't fit. That's the point.

Arachne — the weaver who became the web
In Greek myth, Arachne was a mortal weaver so skilled she challenged Athena — and was transformed into a spider for her pride. Or her excellence. Depending on who tells the story.
Arachne's Reliquary holds that tension. The spider is not a symbol of fear here. It's a symbol of craft — of something made with obsessive precision, of a maker who couldn't stop even when it cost everything.

Why mythology belongs in dark handmade art
Myths were never meant to be comfortable. They were meant to explain the things that couldn't be explained — death, transformation, the parts of nature that don't care about human survival. They were the first dark art.
Handmade objects carry that same weight when they're made with intention. A piece built around Cerberus isn't decoration. It's a conversation with something very old.
That's what we make at Morbid Oddities. Objects that remember where they came from.
